In room 2 we have been doing a lot of baking. Last time we baked we weren’t allowed to use an oven, element or microwave. Though this time Miss J told us that we were allowed to use a stove top and an oven. She also said that we had to make a box out of cardboard that could hold our treat without using tape, staples or any other materials that stick it together apart from the folds its self. Some of us didn’t achieve this as their boxes didn’t  go to plan, however, we had fun having a go and lots of learning was achieved. Here are our pictures, in a new format. We used photopeach which was awesome, although slight confusing at first. We are of course, now experts. Enjoy. Bailey and Jess.

Sweet Treats

Hi everyone, we are doing sweet treats as our end of year inquiry topic. When the children were told they got extremely excited. Until I then explained they couldn't use an oven, oven top (elements) or a microwave. This was an interesting concept for some. After a brainstorm and sharing of ideas and going home to check out mum / dad and google, we had an exciting range of sweet treats. I am very proud of them all, as there was quite a range of different sweets. Check out our photos.

We followed the recipe to make our treats. Once they were done, some of us found that it didn't turn out as expected!

Calender Art, Itsy Bitsy Spider and Topsy Turvy Day

This week we did our fantastic calender art. First we drew the hills with pencil and then we started painting the hills. We had to mix the paint to make it lighter because Mrs Fowler said that it would give it the effect we needed. We also used ohp (over head projector) material to make the wings. We made them beautiful and colourful and added some little babies in as well.

On the 14th of September we had our topsy turvy day and we had a lot of fun deciding what we would wear as you could see Abby decided to go as a nerdy person. She even coloured her eyebrows!

I HOPE WE HAVE ANOTHER AWESOME DAY LIKE THIS AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When we had Mrs Fowler as a reliever teacher we did the itsy bitsy spider poem but we didn't do the usual poem we made up different problems of our own. Once we had done two poems we had to choose the best one. We drew a spider on a big piece of paper in pencil. Then we out lined the spider in black sharpie. Next we cut the spider out and wrote our poem onto it in pencil. After we had done that we went over it in sharpie. Finally we  coloured it in and cut it out.

Musical Rhythyms

This week for music, we were learning about rhythms and beats. We learnt about the different kinds of beats: crotchets, (pears) quavers, (apples) triple (pineapple) and semiquavers. (watermelons) We also learnt about timing & treble and bass clefs, and discussed which instrument would play treble of bass clef. We all made our own rhythm, then got into groups to share them. We then voted on our favourite one within our groups & performed them in front of the class.

Narrative Writing & Inquiry Learning

In room 2 we have been learning to write a narritive about a haunted mansion. We had to include an orientation, a beginning event, a problem,a resolution and a conclusion. We were not allowed to use said, and we discovered that there were alot words to replace said. E.g. growled, giggled, uttered, demaded, bellowed and many more.

In inquiry learning our big aim for this term was "How has the olympics and athletes competing changed over time?" Then we had to think of  smaller questions like,How have the running shoes changed over time? or Are olympians eating a healthier diet these days? We are really excited about getting more into our inquiry.By Bailey.

etherpad writing

Good morning everyone, Room 2 was introduced to etherpad writing at computer time with Mrs Prescott on Wednesday. We were in groups of two. When we typed we could see other children's writing happening at the same time!! We had 3-4 groups on one pad. It was exciting to see everyones writing at the same time. Here is a comment from Mrs Prescott.

Hi Room 2

I went through the class etherpads and saw this outstanding piece of writing:

Lego Mini Figures
The wind swirled around me, creating a tornado of leaves and dust around ankle hight. The city was deserted, not a living creature in sight. The rain poured down continuously, drenching everything and everyone in its path. Trees swayed violently, a living nightmare for birds. The sun had disappeared behind the horizon eons ago, plunging the city into immense darkness.

The wind tore through the city like a pair of scissors through paper.

Lightning zapped on buildings and trees alike, leaving a static sound in the air. Thunder boomed like an eternal drumbeat. Birds screeched, sirens, a warning to all. A car hurridly swerved wildly down the street, narrowly missing a broken lampost by a mere centimeter, fumes hissing out of the cars exhaust pipe. Suddenly, a group of cats scuttled away quickly in a torrent of shrieks.

I love the way a picture was built up in the mind with the rich language.  Well done Lego Mini Figures.

Regards
Mrs Prescott

Recipe Writing Online

Today, Room  2 learnt about Recipe writing using an online notepad called Etherpad.

The recipe was:

Ingredients: Setting the scene, Tuning in the ear, Developing the character, Creating the action, The resolution.

Method:

1. Bring your reader in to a powerful setting of the scene where your story is to unfold.

2. Introduce some sound into the scene to further engage the senses of the reader.

3. Have your character appear dramatically within the setting.

4. Create the action that will bind the reader into the story and continue to develop this to the penultimate moment.

5. Resolve the story with some revisiting of the scene, the sounds or the character that was central to the storyline.  leave your reader with something magic to hold on to.

We were put into groups and there were 4 groups assigned to each online notepad.  The great thing about it was, as we typed our stories, we could see what others were typing at the same time, and learn from each other.

We only had time for steps 1 and 2.  Here is a selection of snippets from our writing in its draft stage.  We will finish our writing and then publish the completed stories.  Enjoy.

TB LEGENDS

Lightning crackling like bacon sizzling on the frying pan.  Birds chirping trying to save themselves and their families from the rain coming in their nest/home.

Oragami  Yodas

One stormy night the wind was incredibly strong shooting through the trees like birds. Lots of thunder crackled in the sky like wood in a fire burning slowly.

Hockey Masters

The thunder ripped through the sky. The wolves howled a blood curdling scream that sent shivers down my spine.

Dominos pizza

While they were looking the storm got louder.

The MC Chicken

The smaller trees were being thrashed around violently until they hit the ground and got stuck there. Not much later, a big tree went down like a building in an earthquake, taking all the other trees down with it, the same as dominos.

Midnight Madness

Leaves swirled around my ankles causing scratches and the dark venom- like-blood dripped slowly down my shaking leg. Thunder claps above me, as I drearily walk home through the currents of the storm, splashing through the puddles as big as lakes, my feet and shoes sopping wet.

Wild

The night was a catastrophe. Wind swirling as lightning bolts appear in the sky. A tornado forms and twists and turns towards us.

The Chocolate Milkshakes

Umbrellas were twisting and turning. The thunder boomed and the wind howled. Trees smashing against the window.

Lego Mini Figures

The wind swirled around me, creating a tornado of leaves and dust around ankle height. The city was deserted, not a living creature in sight. The rain poured down continuously, drenching everything and everyone in its path. Trees swayed violently, a living nightmare for birds. The sun had disappeared behind the horizon eons ago, plunging the city into immense darkness.

The KT Waggafuffles

As I stood there waiting for my bus I was breathless in terror.

The Gummy Bears

The trees looked like monsters in their shadows, ganging up on us.

The sound of the trees whistling,

 Dragon Born

As I was waddling through the chilling snow I saw a twister ravaging the icy pane.

A&A

My drenched pants dragged through the water as I tried to make my way out of the flood.

The wind howls in the occasional breaks of sound from the waves clashing on the rocky walls

Narrative Writing

Today we have been learning how to write the setting in a narrative. Miss Coffer put a picture of a beach up on the Mimio and we had to describe it. We did a brainstorm in groups and came up with a W.A.L.T and  S.C.  Our W.A.L.T was describe the setting of a beach and our S.C. was :
  • Use 4 sentences
  • 5 senses
  • Use adjectives
  • Use similes
  • Use personification
We had to start with "I stood at the beach" and we couldn't use more than 1 simile, metaphor or personification in our description. Below are some examples and some photos of the brainstorms. Enjoy!!!

I stood at the beach tasting a tantalising milky coconut, gazing at the lush green tropics.

I stood at the beach and I saw the rainbow coloured tropical fish gliding through the crystal clear, glimmering water.

The cry of a seagull overhead, sharp and loud.

Experiments gone wrong

Hi everyone, Room 2 was busy writing up scientific experiments as part of procedural writing. We wrote up an experiment and brought in all the things we needed for the experiment.
The catch was, Miss J wanted us to do someone's elses experiment to see if we could follow their instructions!!  We all passed with flying colours. Here are some pictures.

This week we have been presenting our inquiry project that we have been working on all term. Our theme has been Medicine. Some ideas were accupuncture, artificial legs, bones, MRI equipment, colds / flu and body parts. We learnt a lot of different information about a range of medical treatments and themes. It was great that we got to pick our own topic of inquiry.  By Room 2

Don't forget to be writing the speeches for next term. Your children have been given their speech planning booklets with some hints and success criteria for them to follow. They don't need to be perfect (but they should be finished), as we will be editing throughout the first week. Thanks. Miss J. Have great holidays, get some rest and have fun.

writing scientific procedures

Room 2 has been learning to write Scientific procedures. You need a Hypothesis, Materials, Method, Results and a Conclusion. We wrote a whole class one on how to make popcorn. Our hypothosis was How long would it take for all the kernals to pop, we estimated 2.30seconds. This was exciting because we got to eat the popcorn afterwards.

Next week we are writing up our own experiments. Other students will then try to follow them and complete the experiment. This will interesting to see how well we wrote our instructions. We can't wait. By Abby.

Assembly items and reports

Today we had to run our Senior School Assembly. We showed our finished poisonous flowers which looked stunning as we walked around. Some of us got to dance on stage to the Elmo song. That was great fun. We did really well and everyone loved our items.

We have been writing reports about Anzac Day, Colin Murdoch and Louis Pasteur. Alena, Justine and Lewis, presented their reports at our assembly.

Next week we hope to have some pictures up of our finished flowers for you to see.

Also we started WOW - Word Of the Week. Our first word was undulating, this week Thomas picked - Quaeritate which means - to question. Look out in your children's communication books for next week's WOW. By Abby and Anthony

Art techniques

Room 2 has been using a range of techniques to make our flowers look like 3D. Some of these techniques are: using curled or arched shapes instead of straight lines and using shading to make it look darker or lighter in different areas. We have also been using the shading to contrast different colours. The techniques are trying to get a 3D affect to make it jump out of the paper.

These flowers are poisonous to humans. We choose poisonous flowers as they were based on the topic the bigger, better, faster, stronger (also the world of medicine). As well as being are topic for art. This person is onto colouring and shading the flower.

Tyler is trying to create the effect from the flower as it has the centre effect which is quite hard as you have to make it look as real as you possibly can.

You have to try and get the right curves and sharp edges which we as a class have found quite interesting to master this technique. Some people have found this art very fun some have found it quite tricky.
Here is a practise of one of the flowers in our thinking skills book.We practised the techniques in our book before moving onto our good copy with a selection of A4 or A3. We would practise our curves and we would experimented with a various. By Tyler and Alena

Wonderings Wall

Hi everyone, we have been looking at the wonderful world of medicine. Our inquiry for this term will look at a range of all things medicine. Some of us are looking at bones, amputation, antibiotics and much much more. We are so interested in learning about different ranges of medicine that we wrote all our wondering / ideas / questions onto sticky notes.

As you can see we had lots of questions that we can't wait to find out about. Parents can you please help us in our inquiry as we will be researching our topic that we have picked. By: Tegan and Abby

Study Tips and Generally good information

Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day

Seventy percent of the planet is covered with water. Approximately 70% of your body is made up of water. over 80% of your brain is water. A lack of water can lead to dehydration which causes headaches, lack of concentration and focus, tiredness and many other challenges. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day is also important for heath and success. Keep a water bottle beside you when studying and take water into the exam with you (if allowed).

I have been receiving some great study tips via a friend. This one is a good one. Miss J.

Anzac Day Writing & Failed Experiment

Today we wrote an introduction for our information reports on ANZAC day.
For the people that doesn't know what ANZAC means, it stands for Australian and
New Zealand Army Corps.
Firstly, we did a table on the ideas we wanted to base our paragraphs on,
how much we knew about that idea and some research questions on that idea.
Secondly, we found out more about it and answered the questions that
we wrote on the table. Now we were ready to write our introduction.
This we did today.

The SPCA came and talked to us on Wednesday. They talked about how we could help them out and help the animals. Here are some handy hints: You can make rag fairies. These are pieces of flanellete sheets, pure/heavy cotton sheets or pillow cases cut into 40cm x 40cm squares. They also need lots of newspaper, towels, and food for all animals, not just cats and dogs. Did you know they care for horses, sheep, cows any farm animal as well as domestic?

We can also make tug toys. These are long strips of fabric plaited together with knots in them. The longer they are, the better.
The Failed Experiment
We heard from Miss J that if you crush WeetBix or Nutrigrain into powder, you could find particles of iron. So we crushed lots of Weetbix and Nurtigrain and used magnetics to extract the iron. Unfortunately there was not enough iron to be seen, and also we think our magnetics were not strong enough. It was fun though.

Handwriting and Fitness in Room 2

Hi everyone, we have started handwriting and writing reports this term.
Handwriting was challenging because we had to do it timed (10 minutes only).
Not only did we have to do it fast but we had to do it accurrately showing good
size, slope, shape and flicking. We also had to peer assess another persons
handwriting. This was also challenging because you were looking at another
persons work. It was good though because we now have a handwriting goal.

For fitness this term, the teachers have
changed it so we only do two activities.
They are shuttle runs and skipping with ropes.
We do this for 10-15 minutes. It is extremely
hard. The purpose is to get us fit and healthy.
Miss J joined us today for the shuttle runs.
It was funny looking at her running. We hope
that we will all be fit and strong but the end
of this term.

Wacky Hair Day

Jess                                                                               Samuel
These three children had the craziest hair dos in the class. We had an amazing assembly. At the assembly we sung Bad Hair Day and these three were up the front of the entire school doing the actions to the song. They put in alot of effort, time and a little bit of money for colours. Do you like their style?

Lakewood Lodge Brochures

Over the last few weeks we have making camp booklets. Now we are onto the part where we make camp brochures. First we had to make a draft in our book to plan what our brochure would look like. So far we are still on our drafts but some fast-finishers are already onto their good copy on publisher as shown on the bottom picture.  We chose the programme Pblisher because it is easier than Word as there is a brochure template. Hopefully on Monday we will all be up to our good copies. We still have a lot to do on our camp booklets so we hope for the best. The camp booklets will be coming home so we can keep them for life.
